ABOUT SHENA!
Music has always been a family affair for Shena! Her grandfather, Elijah Mondy, Sr., was a member of the Arkansas-based quartet, Southern Echoes. Later, he formed the Golden Suns in Chicago and then the Mondy Trio, which included her mother and aunt. The trio performed on the Bill Dock Lee Radio Show, a gospel staple that highlighted prominent Chicago performers such as the Staple Singers, Barrett Sisters and the Hutchinson Sunbeams, who later changed their name to the Emotions.
Born and raised in Chicago, Shena! learned to read music and play the piano as a teenager. She has also studied under the tutelage of Elsa Harris, a leading instructor and performer who toured with legendary gospel artist Jessy Dixon. A gifted songwriter, she realized that music was her calling when she received acclaim for her songs in Europe. In 2010, her inspirational song, Behind the Scenes, received praise when it hit the radio airwaves in Chicago.
Shena! returned to her musical roots after her strong faith in the Lord was put to the test. Her life was endangered while undergoing surgery for the removal of a fibroid tumor the size of a cantaloupe. She credits the prayers of her mother for the Lord saving her life and knew it was time to sing again. She became a praise and worship leader at her church and was the lead performer in the motivational play, Incidents while living in the Miami area.
Motivated by the battles her friend and producer both faced to combat COVID-19, Shena! is kicking off her new album with the single, Better Together, which she hopes will bring healing and encouragement to a world grappling with the crippling effects of a pandemic.
